Monthly Bonsai Advice
with Rosemarie Caston
JAX & ROSE Bonsai
Welcome back to Rosemarie's Zen Garden, where I share what's happening on our bonsai benches each month here on the Sunshine Coast.
July is one of the coolest months of the year in Southeast Queensland. Growth has slowed on many bonsai, but winter is far from a time to forget about your trees. It's a month to observe, maintain and prepare for the busy spring growing season.
One thing I've learnt over the years is that no two winters are ever the same. This year we've experienced more cloudy, cool and wet weather than we would normally expect through June and into early July.
Because of these changing conditions, it's more important than ever to care for each bonsai individually rather than following a fixed routine.
This Month in Rosemarie's Zen Garden

As we move through July, I've already made a few seasonal adjustments around our bonsai benches.
The cooler weather has noticeably reduced our watering routine. Rather than watering every day, I now check every tree individually. After rainy days many of our bonsai don't require watering at all, and on calm winter days most are only needing water every second day. Some established trees are comfortably going three to four days before needing another thorough drink.
Strong winter winds can still dry shallow bonsai pots surprisingly quickly, so although I'm watering less often, every tree is still checked daily.
One tree that continues to impress me this winter is my Bougainvillea 'Bambino Maudi'.
It has remained in full sun throughout the cooler months and continues to thrive while only requiring water every three to four days. Healthy Bougainvillea love sunshine and certainly don't enjoy sitting in constantly wet soil during winter.

2026–2027 Bimer Bonsai Club Challenge
This year I'm taking part in the 2026–2027 Bimer Bonsai Club Bougainvillea Challenge, where members have twelve months to transform a nursery Bougainvillea into a bonsai ready for exhibition.
I'll be sharing the progress of my Bougainvillea 'Bambino Maudi' each month here on the JAX & ROSE Bonsai blog, documenting its transformation from nursery stock to exhibition bonsai for next year's Bimer Bonsai Club Show.
Along the way I'll share the techniques I'm using, the seasonal decisions I make, styling progress, successes, setbacks and the lessons I learn throughout the journey.
Follow along each month as this tree gradually develops into a finished bonsai.

I've also moved many of our Junipers into positions where they receive a longer period of winter sunshine. The extra light helps keep the foliage healthy, improves airflow through the canopy and dries the morning moisture more quickly.
Another pleasant surprise has been our Serissa, which is still flowering beautifully despite the cooler weather.
Our Bottlebrush bonsai have also been very happy this winter. Positioned where they receive around five hours of morning sunshine and protected from the stronger winter winds, they've produced plenty of fresh new growth throughout June.
While inspecting one of our Eucalyptus bonsai, I noticed fungal leaf spotting beginning to develop on some of the older leaves.

The combination of cool temperatures, damp weather and longer periods of leaf moisture creates ideal conditions for fungal diseases. I've removed some of the affected foliage, improved airflow around the tree and will continue
monitoring it over the coming
weeks. If required, I'll apply a suitable copper-based fungicide.

One lesson this winter continues to reinforce is the importance of good airflow. Bonsai enjoy fresh moving air throughout the year, but try to avoid exposing them to strong drying winds that can quickly stress foliage and dry shallow pots.
Watering
Watering remains the most important bonsai task during July.
Although many trees require less water than they did during summer, don't be tempted to water simply because it's "watering day". Check each tree individually and water according to its needs.
Morning watering is always preferred, allowing the foliage and soil surface to dry before cooler evening temperatures arrive.Water according to the tree's needs, not the calendar.
July Watering Tips
✔ Check every tree daily.
✔ Water according to the weather, not the calendar.
✔ Don't water after rain unless the soil requires it.
✔ Watch shallow pots during windy weather.
✔ Reduce watering frequency, not observation.
Sunlight and Positioning
Winter sunshine is one of the best things you can give many bonsai during July.
Junipers, Pines and most Australian natives benefit from maximum sunlight and good airflow. Tropical species such as Figs, Bougainvillea and Serissa also appreciate bright conditions but should be protected from strong cold winds and prolonged exposure to very cold overnight temperatures.
Finding the balance between sunshine and shelter is often the secret to healthy winter bonsai.
Fertilising
July isn't the month for heavy feeding.
Dormant deciduous trees generally require little or no fertiliser, while healthy evergreen species can still receive light feeding if they continue growing.
Avoid trying to force soft new growth during the coldest part of winter.
Pruning and General Maintenance
July is an excellent month for slowing down and giving your bonsai a good clean-up.
Remove weeds, dead twigs, old leaves and unwanted shoots. Keep benches tidy by clearing away fallen leaves and old fertiliser that may trap moisture or provide shelter for pests.
These small jobs now often prevent larger problems later.
Wiring and Styling

With slower growth, branch structure becomes much easier to see, making July one of my favourite months for wiring and refining branch placement.
Many Queensland bonsai continue growing slowly throughout winter, particularly Junipers and Australian natives. Wire can still bite into branches before you realise it, so continue checking all existing wire regularly.
Species Spotlight
Continue providing maximum winter sunshine, excellent airflow and careful watering.
Keep in full sun and avoid overwatering. They prefer slightly drier conditions throughout winter.
Healthy trees may continue flowering through winter when protected from cold winds.
Morning sunshine, good drainage and protection from harsh winter winds have encouraged strong new growth throughout our collection.
Watch carefully for fungal leaf spotting during cool, damp weather. Improve airflow and remove affected foliage where practical.
July Bonsai Checklist
✓ Check every tree daily.
✓ Water according to the weather.
✓ Make the most of winter sunshine.
✓ Protect trees from harsh drying winds.
✓ Stay on top of weeds.
✓ Check all wiring.
✓ Watch for fungal disease.
✓ Keep benches clean and well ventilated.
✓ Begin preparing pots, soil and tools for the upcoming repotting season.
Rosemarie's Tip of the Month
Don't water because the calendar says it's time, water because your bonsai needs it. Every tree is different, and winter weather can change quickly. I check every bonsai every day, even though many of them don't actually need watering.
A Few Final Thoughts
July reminds us that bonsai isn't always about major pruning or dramatic styling. Sometimes the biggest improvements come from slowing down, observing each tree and making small seasonal adjustments.
Every bonsai is different. By paying attention to the weather, your soil, your growing position and your individual trees, you'll learn far more than simply following a calendar.
I hope these monthly observations from our bonsai benches help you enjoy your own bonsai journey throughout the year.
Happy Bonsai Growing,
